First Sunday of Christmas--December 27, 2020

First Sunday of Christmas

December 27, 2020

(UberConference call 234-204-0311)

[Please be in a spirit of worship while you are on the phone call.  Your phone microphone is very sensitive; what seems quiet in the sanctuary sounds more like a like a thunderstorm or police siren on the phone.   Your phone or computer microphone can pick up a whisper or paper shuffling from five feet away.]

Call to Worship

One: Arise! Shine! The light you have been waiting for is here!
All: Darkness has been-banished!
One: God's light of hope floods the earth
All: God's light comes to us all.
One: Lord, make us ready to journey to this Light.
All: Prepare our hearts to receive this Light.

Opening Prayer

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. AMEN

Hymn                                               O Come, All Ye Faithful

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)

O God, in Christ you were born a humble child, love-made-flesh, God-with-us. Forgive us when we fail to follow in your way of humility, love, and peace. Free us to see your Light reflecting in the faces of friends and family, neighbors and strangers, enemies and friends, and make us shine forth with your love. May the new life born in the manger awaken new life in us and allow hope to dawn in the year ahead.

Assurance of Pardon

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen, Amen.

Passing the Peace of Christ

ONE: Since Christ has extended to us the peace of God, let us, as his disciples, spread his peace to others. The peace of Christ be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
ONE: We are now going to check to see who is with us this morning as our way of sharing Christ’s peace.

Affirmation of Faith             On the  Nativity

I believe in the Living God who is directly involved in the affairs of the world.  I believe that God chooses the meek and the poor to shame the proud and the rich.  I believe the incarate Word, leaping in a woman's womb, cradled in poverty.  I believe in Jesus, true son of Mary, true Son of God, who came among us in weakness, that we might come to know the profound strength available to common people who turn to God in trust with love.  This I truly believe. Amen.
